2011A Handmade Wedding

December’s always such a good time to reflect back on the year that was. And what a roller-coaster year it has been! 2011 marked the year where The Bag Bar girls played event organiser for our friends and family, and one of them being my sister and her fiance’s wedding in June.

The calm in the morning of the big day
The betrothed couple really wanted an intimate occasion for their nearest and dearest and there’s no better way to convey an intimate wedding than a hand-crafted one. Anyone who has been a bride would readily tell us that it’s not easy to organise a wedding, let alone a handmade one! It’s quite a daunting task, and so it was very exciting for Sue and I to be entrusted with conceptualising a purple-themed ‘handmade wedding’. Add to that, the venue was going to be at the beach. Very romantic indeed:-)
Luckily for us, we knew that to hand-craft everything, preparations ( early! ) and materials ( lots of it! ) are key. We started crafting these crepe pom-poms from December of last year! We stored them away until we could use them on the day. Don’t you just loooove the gorgeous hues?

Lots of pom-poms, everywhere!
We were so inspired by the whole fluffiness of weddings that we made the bride and bridesmaids’ feather bouquets, boutonnières for both the boys and girls, and the ring pillow! TBB also made the specially-cut and punched wishing cards for the wishing tree. We were especially chuffed with the pièce de résistance: hand-cut lampshades monogrammed with the couple’s initials for every table. It looks so warm and gorgeous with a soft glow from a floating candle inside it.
It took us a trial run for the table setting a month prior to the day and a whole day of setting up on the day to complete the look for a purplelicious beach wedding. We had such terrible sunburn, our fault for not heeding the ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ rule ( Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat! ).

Trial table setting
We strung a chiffon sash between 2 coconut trees to become the arch where the couple will stand with the priest. It was where the sun will set behind it and here’s where we are known to be quite the perfectionists: we had even timed it during the trial so we’d know exactly when the sun sets! :-)
The moment my sister and hubby and the wedding party danced towards the bamboo aisle to Jack Johnson’t ‘Better Together’ amidst a setting of purple poms-poms just in time for the sun setting behind the coconut arch, made it worth every bit the effort!
