2011Happy Chinese New Year!

The Chinese all over the world will be celebrating Chinese New Year on the 3rd and 4th February this year. We love this time of the year because the streets come to life with very vibrant colours in anticipation of the festivities. And there’s no other place in KK more colourful now than Gaya Street, also known as Chinatown, right in the heart of the city.

We usually do a collection to commemorate a celebration such as this and we really wanted to do one for Chinese New Year too. When else do you get an opportunity to rework the traditional conception of an Oriental-style bag? It’s very tempting to use silk or satin brocade in a loud red perhaps, but we wanted to steer well clear of that and instead make a more subdued and understated interpretation. Inspired by our recent purchases from Shanghai which feature a cool blue cotton with white Sashiko-style prints, we used a simple silhouette for the bag to showcase the linear pattern of the fabric and added in subtle details of Chinese knots and charms. The result is ‘tung tung tung chang’ ( drumroll on a lion-dance drum) :p

Happy Chinese New Year to all of you who are celebrating and to Malaysians, enjoy the holidays!
